Porn Links Considered Harmful

Hi, my name is Ali Aras, and I report porn links when they’re posted in fleet chat if the FC is not responsive to convos (yes, even when it’s my blues). Why do I hate fun? Well…

Fleet chat is not the place for your porn links.¬†Think of it like a room you have to share with everyone else coming in. You don’t put porn up in the lobby of your building. There’s no “just don’t be in fleet chat” option if you want to experience that part of the game. If you know that everyone who’ll show up is in on your joke, is not bothered by or does not feel threatened by porn links, by all means, go ahead and post them! You will not be reported, you will not be banned, and you can go forth and enjoy your spaceships game and your naked pictures. Anyone who says “nah man it’s totally cool” and then reports you anyways is Grade-A Asshole Material and should feel bad.

That said, it is perfectly possible that your fleet has people in it who are extremely uncomfortable with said porn links. Fortunately, CCP has banned those links. They are Against the Rules. Don’t want to be banned? Don’t post porn links if you don’t know that everyone there is cool with that. Make a pornfleet channel for all I care.

Most of the conversation on twitter has centered around, roughly, “well everyone else¬†should be comfortable with that, or don’t click if they’re not”. The rest of this post attempts to address this.

Porn links, whether I click on them or not, turn fleets for me into a place where I feel uncomfortable and on edge. Everyone around me is idly consuming pictures of people like me, sexualized and objectifying. I’m not just bothered, the way I am when some dude won’t shut up about how much weed he smoked (newsflash: nobody cares!); I’m painfully aware of the fact that I’m a woman and I’m hiding in relative obscurity lest the Eye of Sauron fall upon me and my voice. That’s not just paranoia— I’ve been sexually harassed in fleets (less so, now that I rarely join fleets I don’t run or aren’t in my alliance— not that I think that’s an acceptable solution), and it is never a particularly fun time. It’s something beyond someone saying something mean to me.

I just want to enjoy a goddamn game without having to deal with this particular strain of bullshit, and fortunately, CCP has agreed with me. There are other types of equally-harmful bullshit that remained unbanned; rest assured I have not advocated that you be banned for using slurs or misusing the word ‘rape’. However, I’ll continue to report porn links when they come up, and there’s an easy way to not get banned: leave it to an actually-private channel, for fuck’s sake.

Moderation notes: In the likely event that this spawns a comment thread a mile long, I will be patient and argue in good faith. I expect everyone else commenting to do the same; if something devolves into personal attacks and pithy slogans, I’ll start deleting.

A must read for eve players who talk in public/semi-public channels such as fleet, local, shared player channels etc.
